About

Capoeira

Over 400 years ago on Brazilian soil, African slaves developed the martial art of Capoeira as a means to resist oppression. The singing, clapping, and traditional musical instruments that accompany Capoeira lead many to believe it is a dance; but concealed within the fluid movements and playfulness lie strategic attacks and seamless takedowns.

Capoeira is for adults and children of all ages and abilities. Whether you’re seeking to improve your balance, agility, strength, coordination — or simply looking for a great workout in a positive environment — come try a class!

Contra-Mestra Gata Brava

Leigh Robertson (Contra-Mestra Gata Brava) began training under the guidance of Mestre Doutor, A.S.C.A.B. Capoeira, in 2000. Since receiving her Instructor cord in 2006 she has been a featured guest instructor at Capoeira events throughout the country and abroad. After earning the rank of Professora in 2009, Leigh founded Capoeira Morro Verde with the vision of creating a Capoeira community in her home town of New Hope, PA and opened the first and only Capoeira Academy & Cultural Center in her area. She is dedicated to preserving the unique style of Capoeira passed down to her through a multi-faceted instructional program for children and adults. In 2015 Leigh was promoted to Contra-Mestra and is honored to be the first woman in the history of ASCAB Capoeira to achieve this recognition.

Leigh is determined to inspire as many people as possible through capoeira. Some of her most fulfilling work is with underserved communities that have limited access to the arts. She also performs professionally in movies, artistic productions, festivals, charity events and education centers.

Mestre Doutor

Mestre Doutor (Adenilson Dos Santos) was born in Pernambuco, Recife, Brazil. An early influence on Doutor’s Afro-Brazilian roots comes from his upbringing in a spiritual household that was run by his mother, Dona Severina, a mae de santo or mother of saints.

At 13 years old, Doutor tried a capoeira class with Mestre Camarao in Santos, Brazil, and then decided to train with Mestre Bandeira. Mestre Doutor has practiced Capoeira for 29 years and received his mestre’s belt after 25 years, becoming the first mestre to teach in Philadelphia. As well as teaching in many universities and earning numerous awards and certifications, he is the founder and artistic director of the American Society of Capoeira and Arts from Brazil (ASCAB), a capoeira group, Project Capoeira, Inc., a non-for-profit organization, and the Philadelphia Capoeira Arts Center (PCAC).

As a result of his outstanding knowledge and achievements, Mestre Doutor was recognized as “a person of extraordinary ability in his field” and granted permanent residency in the US in 2004. His passion and dedication reflects his commitment to the preservation of Afro-Brazilian roots and makes him a strong role model, invaluable teacher and inspirational leader.
